At this year’s WALGA Urban Forest Conference, The Arbor Centre shared some real-life lessons on how to protect trees during construction — and why it’s so important to get it right.
Using the Australian Standard AS 4970 – Protection of Trees on Development Sites, the team demonstrated how smart planning, collaboration, and monitoring can significantly contribute to maintaining the health of our urban forests.
Project Spotlight: Walyalup Koort (City of Fremantle)
- Timeline: 2017–2021
- Tree value: Estimated at $1 million
- Goal: Develop the area without losing significant trees.
What worked:
- Trees were assessed before the design started to help shape the project’s footprint.
- Arborists worked alongside designers and builders to plan around trees, protect roots, and avoid damage.
- A detailed Tree Management Plan helped guide the work at every stage — from digging to landscaping.
What were the challenges:
- On-site mistakes like storing machinery under trees, removing temporary fencing, or cutting roots caused avoidable damage.
- These slip-ups proved how vital it is to keep tree protection front of mind throughout construction.
The result:
A redeveloped area that looks great and kept its mature trees standing strong
Mini Case Study: South Perth
- Timeline: 2023–2025
- Tree value: Around $120,000
In this project, early assessment picked up hidden tree roots and unknown underground services. The team used techniques like root barriers, canopy thinning, and ongoing health checks to manage trees alongside development.
The key?
Working with arborists from the start and following a solid plan.
What we’ve learned:
- Get arborists involved early
- Collaborate with designers and builders
- Monitor trees before, during, and after construction
- Use AS 4970 as your guide
When trees are protected properly, everyone wins — from local councils and developers to the community and the environment.
