Nature’s Secret to a Cooler Summer!

Public Spaces

Summer in Perth is almost here, bringing long sunny days and warm evenings. Finding natural ways to stay cool has never been more important.

While many of us turn to air conditioning, fans, or a trip to the beach or pool, our local communities have also been designed to harness the benefits of nature’s own air conditioners… trees!

Why Do We Need Trees in Our Streets and on Our Properties?

Have you ever thought about the trees in your street or neighbourhood? Beyond their beauty, trees play a crucial role in cooling our environment.

For example, a mature tree can reduce the radiant heat of surrounding hardstand surfaces by up to 20°C in its immediate surroundings under favourable conditions during summer. This means your home could be noticeably cooler compared to a similar property without established trees nearby.

Urban developments across Perth increasingly integrate strategically placed trees to help communities withstand hotter summers.

Why Trees Instead of Shade Sails?

Summer encourages us to spend more time enjoying community spaces. Whether that’s at a local park or swimming pool. Trees not only provide cooler environments but also deliver significant cost savings for councils and ratepayers.

A mature tree can generate the equivalent of 6,000 m² of 50% shade each day. To achieve the same coverage with shade sails (approximately 8m x 8m each), around 50 structures would be required. At an estimated $30/m² installation cost, that equates to roughly $96,000 every ten years, an expense that trees naturally offset at no cost.

Local facilities like Aquamotion in Wanneroo showcase how existing native trees can provide natural shade for visitors, making community spaces cooler, more enjoyable, and affordable for everyone.

Shaping the Future

Trees are far more than landscaping features; they are essential to creating liveable, sustainable suburbs across Perth. They cool our homes and streets, reduce public infrastructure costs, and make our communities more enjoyable.
